Please donate and share to help restore Playa Zica Please donate and share to help restore Playa Zicatela, Puerto Escondido!

Over two decades ago a jetty was built in Bahia Principal, one kilometer north of Playa Zicatela which consequently altered the natural cross-shore sand transport cycle at the famed “Mexican Pipeline”.

Year after year this jetty has been trapping sand which has backfilled the beach at Zicatela extending it upwards of 100 meters in some places. Though it still has its moments, the wave has suffered tremendously now breaking closer to shore, often plagued with massive rips and current, and even making it unsurfable when it is small.

For over a decade there has been a local movement to get federal approval for the removal of the jetty in hopes of restoring the beach to its natural state.

But in June 2025, Mother Nature gave its own nod of approval first when Hurricane Erick tore down part of the breakwater.

Afterwards, the people of Puerto Escondido came together: Fishermen, surfers, families, and volunteers showed up and in a massive community effort, began cleaning up and removing the rocks with their bare hands.

Formal approval for its removal has since been granted, but there is still work to do with tons of rocks remaining underwater that can only be removed with heavy machinery.

A campaign has been launched to raise the funds needed to finish this removal project: 2 million pesos— 100 thousand US Dollars which I know the international surfing community can collectively achieve!

All money raised will go directly to fund the labor and equipment needed to remove the remaining rock, in turn allowing the sand to cycle freely once again.

If you’ve ever surfed Zicatela, admired its waves from afar, or simply believe in the power of people and nature united, this is your moment to help.

If you have the means, please donate. Every bit helps. And If not, please share this message and support this amazing communities effort to restore their beach and world class surfing recourse to its natural state!

HURRICANE RELIEF FOR CHACAHUA On June 20th, Cate HURRICANE RELIEF FOR CHACAHUA

On June 20th, Category 3 Hurricane Erik tore through the coast of Oaxaca, Mexico devastating the beautiful and beloved community of Chacahua. Homes destroyed. Families displaced. Access to clean water, food, and basic supplies—gone overnight.

This small but tight knit community, known for its rich culture, stunning nature, and deep connection to the ocean, and its waves needs our help now more than ever.

In collaboration with the community we are launching an urgent relief fundraiser to provide emergency aid and long-term rebuilding support—from shelter repairs to clean drinking water. 100% of funds go directly to the community and trusted grassroots efforts on the ground.

If Chacahua has ever touched your life—and I know it has for many of you surfers out there, or if you simply believe in showing up for those in need—please donate, share, and help us support this incredible place and its people.

There are moments in life that words could never f There are moments in life that words could never fully describe. Experiences felt in the deepest part of your heart and soul they are better held and remembered there.

Getting one last chance to surf @theeddieaikau alongside friends and heroes, and the unexpected honor of receiving the Eddie Aikau “Spirit Award” in memory of Mark Foo was such a moment for me. I won’t try to find words to express how special it was, because they could never do it justice.

I will just say thank you.

Thank you to the Aikau Ohana for keeping the spirit and legacy of Eddie alive with the most beautiful and exhilarating of celebrations, and allowing me to partake for so many years.

Thank you to all the surfers for the endless inspiration both in and out of the water. I feel lucky to have shared so many incredible moments together at Waimea Bay, and call you my friends, and family.

Thank you to the @northshorelifeguardassociation and @hawaiianwaterpatrol for risking your lives, not just during the event, but every single day as guardians of the ocean so everybody can experience its beauty and go home safe. You all are the daily embodiment of Eddie’s spirit.

Thank you to every photographer and filmer for your dedication to capturing these special moments in time so we can remember them more vividly as the years pass and they slowly become diluted in our waterlogged memories.

And thank you to every individual, past, present, and future who plays a part in bringing “The Eddie” to life for the world to experience and remember what is truly important: The love and passion in your heart, grace and humility with which you move through this miracle of a life, and sharing it all along the way.

Participating for 20 years has been the honor and privilege of a lifetime and it is with love, respect, and gratitude, that I say, ALOHA. 🤙🏼

One last paddle out as an invitee to honor Eddie A One last paddle out as an invitee to honor Eddie Aikau.

Each year we fill a questionnaire that asks us to express what being invited and winning The Eddie would mean to us. I am sure that every surfer who has penned an answer to those questions has expressed in some form that both would be a dream come true. For 20 years, I have been one of the privileged few who get to answer those questions and can attest that both are exactly that and so much more.

I vividly recall the feelings of elation the first time my name appeared on the alternate list, and years later as an official invitee. I can recount in fine detail both the nerves and excitement the first time “The Bay called the day”, I put on a jersey, and paddled out to surf “The Eddie”. And of course, the ethereal out of body experience in 2009, while in the presence of many of my surfing heroes, found out I had won the event (which Dave Homcy beautifully captured and shared a few posts back). I recognize that as my greatest surfing accomplishment, but of far greater significance than winning, has simply been the honor of participating in the annual celebration of Eddie’s life, and help perpetuate his legacy which represents the things that truly matter: The love and passion in your heart, and grace, integrity, and humility with which you move through the world.

An invitation to compete could be equated to being given a seat on one of the most beautiful, fun, and exhilarating rides in the world, as every ceremony and competition have been just that. But with limited seats, eventually somebody needs to hop off that ride to allow someone else the opportunity to share in that life changing experience. That time has come for me.

My love and gratitude to everyone for the memories made at Waimea Bay, and to the entire Aikau Ohana for their years of aloha, and for giving a young kid from California the opportunity to realize a dream two decades ago.

I will be wishing for big swell to provide one last chance to surf “The Eddie”, and the very best to those who will soon fulfill their dream and hop on for the experience of a lifetime that is an invitation to the @theeddieaikau

The legendary ocean activist @captainpaulwatson ha The legendary ocean activist @captainpaulwatson has stood for the oceans for decades, and now he needs us to stand up for him!

On Sunday, July 21st, Captain Paul Watson - founder of SeaShepherd and co-founder of Greenpeace - was arrested in Greenland by Danish authorities on an international warrant issued by Japan. He faces an arrest warrant for opposing illegal whaling in Antarctica. If extradited to Japan, he could receive a 15 year prison sentence!

Captain Paul’s actions have always been in the interest of upholding international laws and ensuring the health of the oceans. Despite doing the work of governments, he is being treated as an international criminal, for defending sea life and the ecosystem we all depend on to survive. The people who defend our life support system should be celebrated, not arrested!

Please share this far and wide and demand the immediate release of Captain Paul Watson. As a devoted father and passionate environmentalist, he has stood for the oceans for decades, and now he needs us to stand up for him.

To show your support, sign the petition (link in bio) to #FreePaulWatson and follow his foundation @captainpaulwatson for the most recent updates.

Please donate to support “Clean Air for Puerto Esc Please donate to support “Clean Air for Puerto Escondido”.

Access to clean air should be considered a fundamental human right. Sadly, that is simply not the case and there are millions of people around the world who don’t have it, including the community of Puerto Escondido due to the continued burning of garbage in their local municipal dumps.

Thankfully the incredible teams at “Salvemos Puerto Escondido” @sospuerto @costaunidaoax @salvemos.colorada have been working tirelessly pressuring the local government to put an end to this practice and prioritize environmental policies to reduce this toxic pollution. After months of litigation, they have obtained a “definitive suspension” in their appeal against burning garbage in the municipal dumps, however, the fight is not over. They now need our support to obtain the final ruling and put an end to this terrible practice indefinitely.

Salvemos Puerto Escondido is a community led, grassroots organization dedicated to fighting for a sustainable future for their town. Every donation goes directly to their continued fight and will help bring them one step closer to protecting their environment and ensuring a cleaner, healthier future all.

Right now your support is crucial, and time is of the essence with funding needing before July 31. Every donation, will go directly to cover the cost of this litigation and ensure that the necessary measures for responsible waste management are implemented.

I often wonder where my life would be had I never I often wonder where my life would be had I never received the gift of surfing and experienced the ethereal sensation of riding within a wave. But instead, dedicated the same amount of energy and focus I have in search of such experiences into a more noble pursuit that may be of better service to humanity.

A lifetime dedicated to seeking these fleeting moments that last mere seconds, and aren’t guaranteed would be laughable to most, and even seen as downright crazy. And I, in large part, would have to agree.  But as the saying goes, “one person’s craziness is just another’s reality”. Regardless of where alternative life paths may have led, I am eternally grateful that this somehow became mine and for all the amazing people with whom I am fortunate to share it with.

The sacrifices made mentally, emotionally, and especially physically in search of these self serving moments weigh heavy sometimes.  But when they do, I always find solace in the sage words of spiritual seeker Timothy Leary:

“The act of the ride is the epitome of ‘be here now’, and the tube ride is the most acute form of that.  Which is: your future is right ahead of you, your wake is disappearing, and your footprints are washed from the sand.  It’s a non-productive, non-depletive act that’s done purely for the value of the dance itself. And that is the destiny of man.”

One wave dance to momentary enlightenment at Playa Zicatela, Mexico. 🇲🇽 🙏🏼 ✨
